Squash Bed
The squash bed was originally inspired by the well-known Native American “Three Sisters” guild of squash, corn, and beans. However, we opted instead to transform it into another suntrap system, this time with the beans and tomatoes acting as the Northern wall, maximizing the amount of sunlight to the squash. The beans grow tall and provide shade to the presentation area behind it, and the tomatoes fit neatly in between, benefiting from the nitrogen fixed in the soil by the beans. Amaranth was planted Eastern side, to create an attractive border between the squash and the food forest.
