CANTALOUPE BED

Diagrams represent the initial concept design, and may not be accurate due to the evolving nature of the garden.

Cantaloupe plants are large, sprawling, and require full sunlight. Therefore, it is difficult to incorporate other species that are tall enough to not be completely overtaken, but also shade them out. Instead, we decided to create a sun trap with tobacco plants along the Northern border of the bed, that will reflect the sun back onto the cantaloupes, as well as repel insect pests and accumulate potassium in the soil. In between the rows of cantaloupes we planted a few pole beans and peas to utilize the vertical space,  spread out so as not to cast too much shade. To increase the diversity and add some more companion plants, we included comfrey and calendula along the border, which will attract pollinators and repel pests from the cantaloupes.
